How Chloe found her best lead by "buying the haystack"
Have you ever paid $142 for a single click?
That was the reality for my Google Ads coaching client, Chloe. She operates in a highly regulated, cutthroat niche where earning every lead is a battle. To make matters tougher, she was competing against her own mentor - someone who insisted Google Ads worked in their niche, but refused to share the specifics of their playbook.
Chloe’s budget was modest, and the Search math just wasn't mathing. In 30 days, she had only managed to get 20 clicks. And yet, she already had 64% impression share on her very specific exact match keywords, in her very specific target location. With only one click coming in every day or two, neither Chloe nor the Google Ads algorithm had enough data to breathe, let alone optimize.
She was trying to find the "perfect needle" in a very expensive, very small haystack. So, we decided to buy the whole haystack instead....

I advised Chloe to pause her Search campaigns and shift her budget to Demand Gen instead. By building a custom segment based on search terms, we could target the exact same high-intent people Chloe was going after on Search - but reach them while they were browsing YouTube, scrolling Discover or checking Gmail.
When we checked in a week later, the difference was staggering:
- Search: Only 20 clicks in a full month. A few medium to low quality leads.
- Demand Gen: Over 214 clicks and 5,500+ impressions in just one week - and a high quality lead.
By "buying the haystack," Chloe found a true lead: Hazel, a professional with two potential opportunities for Chloe. In fact, Chloe called her "the best lead I've had in a while" - and she came through Demand Gen, not Search.
If your Search CPCs are draining your bank account for low quality leads, like Chloe, here's what you can try instead:
- Value Volume Over "The Perfect Click": The Google Ads algorithm needs sufficient data to consistently drive conversions. Getting 200+ clicks instead of 20 gives Google 10x the signals it needs to optimize for quality. That's why I call this "buying the haystack" - instead of trying to filter one by one through every piece of hay (search query) hoping to find the needle (quality lead), grab the whole haystack and know that your needle is in there.
-
Stop Competing on Price Alone: If you have high impression share but low volume, stop raising your budget and bids. You’ve already maxed out that "search shelf space," so it's time to explore other channels if you need to unlock more lead opportunities.
-
Use Custom Segments in Demand Gen: Take your top-performing (but expensive) keywords and use them as the audience source for a Demand Gen campaign. Like Chloe, you'll reach the exact same people you're trying to reach in Search, but for a fraction of the cost - as a trade-off for not showing them your ad in their exact moment of intent.
