Google Ads for Beginners: A Guide to Getting Started
Jan 18, 2024By: Jyll Saskin Gales, Google Ads Coach
Ever wished your business could magically appear at the top of Google search results? Well, Google Ads can help you do just that!
In this guide, I'll share the essentials you need to know to launch your first successful Google Ads campaign. Whether you're a seasoned entrepreneur or just starting out, Google Ads can be a powerful tool to drive more customers to your website.
What is Google Ads?
Google Ads is a pay-per-click advertising platform that allows you to show your ads at the top of Google search results. This means you can reach potential customers at the exact moment when they're searching for products or services like yours.
In other words, Google Ads can help you increase website traffic, build brand awareness and boost sales - if you know what you're doing.
What You Need Before Running Google Ads
Before you dive headfirst into Google Ads, make sure your website is ready to convert visitors into customers. This means having a clear call to action, easy navigation, and persuasive content.
After all, what's the point of driving traffic to your website if it's not optimized to turn those visitors into buyers?
Choosing Your Google Ads Campaign Type
Google Ads offers various campaign types, each with its unique purpose. For beginners, I recommend starting with a Search campaign.
This type of campaign allows you to show your ads when people search for specific keywords related to your business.
How To Pick Keywords in Google Ads
Queries are the words or phrases people type into Google when searching for something. As an advertiser, you choose keywords that you want to show ads on. When there's a match between a user's query and your keyword, you're eligible to show an ad!
Choosing the right keywords is crucial for the success of your Google Ads campaign. While many third-party tools exist, Google Ads Keyword Planner is free and easy to use to research and select relevant keywords.
Now, Write Great Ads
Your ad headline is the first thing potential customers will see. Make it count! A great headline should include your keywords, a clear call to action (like "Shop Now" or "Learn More"), or a unique selling point that differentiates your business.
Google will mix and match different headlines together to create your Responsive Search Ads.
Setting a Realistic Budget
Be prepared to invest at least $20 per day for at least a month to give your Google Ads campaign a fair chance.
You'll also want to ensure you're getting at least 10 clicks per day to make the effort worthwhile. If the cost-per-click (CPC) in your industry is more expensive, you may need to spend $100 per day or more to see results.
Common Google Ads Mistakes To Avoid
To save yourself time, money, and frustration, be aware of these common Google Ads pitfalls:
- Not enough budget: You need to spend money to make money. A low budget often results in low-quality traffic that's less likely to convert.
- Poor ad copy: If your ads aren't getting clicks, it might be time to revamp your ad copy.
- Not owning your Google Ads account: Always own your account to have full visibility and control. If you're working with an agency or freelancer, make sure you own the account, and you grant them access, not vice versa
Should You Hire a Google Ads Agency?
While Google Ads can seem overwhelming, you don't have to go it alone. Hiring a Google Ads agency or freelancer can be a smart move, especially if you don't have the time or expertise to manage your campaigns yourself.
Just be sure to choose someone with excellent communication skills and a proven track record of success.
Optimizing Your Google Ads Campaign
Once your campaign is up and running, the work isn't over. To get the most out of your Google Ads investment, regularly optimize your campaigns by analyzing your search terms, adjusting your keywords, and improving your ad copy.
